Gaming Headsets are Dead: The Buy Guide for Gaming Audio

For most people, audio in games cannot be sacrificed and overlooked. Wearing either a pair of headphones, ear buds, or a gaming headset is a typical necessity. This buy guide is here to give you more opportunities for gaming audio other than the standard TurtleBeach headsets.

So what components make a gaming headset? Simply a set of headphones with a microphone attached to it. With this basic principle, we can actually find great alternatives for less money, ultimately saving you more cash for those Steam sales.

Let’s start with headphones. There are so many good headphones for gaming, on top of being great for listening for music. These can range anywhere from $30 – $300.

Choosing headphones is always a chore. Do you want higher quality audio, or a great looking set? For gaming specific, audio is always a must, but that doesn’t mean that looks necessarily have to suffer.

For good sound: Superlux HD668B Dynamic Semi-Open Headphones

These are open back headphones so you can hear the sounds in the room around you. It’s great if you need to be contacted, and the sound stage is very good, almost as if there were stereo speakers in your room. At under $50, they’re a steal. As my personal favorite, I find something intrinsically cool about headphones like these.

For looks and sound: Audio-Technica ATH-M50 Professional Studio Monitor Headphones

These are the famous Audio Technicas at just under $100. This good looking pair of headphones is a definite possibility for being seen in public without cutting back on sound quality.

For the empty wallets: Monoprice 108323 Premium Hi-Fi DJ Style Over-the-Ear Pro Headphone, Black

They’re cheap, they’re good. 35 bucks. Need I say more?

For the audiophiles: Sennheiser HD 429 Headphones Black

At around $50, these are the best bang for your buck. You’re not going to find much better in the department of over-ear open back headphones.

Now you maybe wondering, “But Sean!? How can I have a headset mic without a headset?” Well interested reader, look no further than here, because I can take care of that as well!

For the microphones-that-lay-on-table people: Samson Go Mic Portable USB Condenser Microphone

This is a great digital mic, very cheap and USB 2.0. It’s more of an environmental mic, with a huge pickup range, and some pretty nice balance. It can go on a mic stand, on top of your monitor, or on your desk. With a straight USB connection and under $40, it’s very easy to set up and start talking.

For the thrifty: Zalman Zm-Mic1 High Sensitivity Headphone Microphone

This mic clips on to your headphones. It can plug in straight to a 3.5 mm microphone outlet. Doesn’t get much easier than that.

For that headset feel: V-MODA BoomPro Gaming, VoIP Headset Headphone with Mic (Black)

Want that premium look of a headset, but can’t because you use headphones? Look no further than these. It actually replaces the cord for your headphones, effectively creating a full gaming headset.

For all the glory: ModMic

Being probably the best mic for headphones, you get that same premium look, and sound, but a higher quality mic. It comes with a mute button, and a magnet that lets you attach it to the side of your headphones. Just rinse and repeat for multiple headsets.

Headphone Stand:

Just so you can display a sick pair of headphones.

Desk-Clamp: Audio Technica ATH-HPH300 | Headphone Hanger (Japan Import)

Just Stand: Acrylic Aluminum Headphone Stand Display

Also, cable attachments. You want a headset for your PS4, and Xbox One, but prefer one of these? These cable attachments will let you do just that.
You will first need one of these adapters:

PS4: You don’t need an adapter since the port on the PS4 controller has a standard headphone jack. Just use the StarTech headset adapter, and you’re good.

So enjoy your new headset on every platform, and make sure you have fun. Did I miss anything? Is there something you wished to see on here? Leave a comment below, and check back on the site for more updates and articles all the time.
